Michael L. Calligan was born on 15 May 1820 in Galway, Galway, Ireland.2 Michael immigrated to America in 1844 .1 He married Catherine McGee in 1848.3 His wife Catherine died on 27 October 1872.2 He died on 9 February 1889 in Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa. 4.5 He was buried in Corpus Christi Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Webster county, Iowa.
From the Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Webster and Hamilton Counties, Iowa, published in 1888: "Michael Calligan, residing on section 35, Cooper Township, is one of the pioneers of 1857. He is a native of County Galway, Ireland, and came to the United States in 1844. In 1846 he married Catherine McGee, a native of County Monoghan, Ireland, who came to America when quite young. After their marriage they settled in Salisbury, Connecticut, where they lived several years, and in 1857 moved west and settled in Fort Dodge. Mrs. Calligan died several years ago. They had a family of four children, three daughters and one son - Susan M. married James McCoskie in 1863, and died in 1864; Mary E. married C. W. Maher in 1870, and is now a resident of Badger Township; Catherine E. is the widow of L. C. Warner, and lives at Miles City, Montana; Frank is engaged in the mercantile business at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mr. Calligan has been an industrious, energetic citizen and is respected by all who know him."
The obituary, in the 14 February 1889 Fort Dodge Messenger, reads: SAD DEATH OF M. L. CALLIGAN: His Neck Broken By a Fall Down Stairs Last Saturday Evening - The Coroner's Verdict: Michael L. Calligan, one of Webster County's prosperous and popular farmers, met his death in a peculiarly sad manner at his home in Cooper Township last Saturday evening. Mr. Calligan had been in town during the day and had returned home at about eight o'clock in the evening. At nine o'clock he went upstairs to retire for the night and a few minutes later lay at the foot of the stairs, a corpse. It is thought that after going to his room he remembered something demanding his presence down stairs and missed his footing at the stairway in the dark. The family with whom he was living were startled by the sound of the fall and at once investigated its origin. They found Mr. Calligan lying at the foot of the stairs. When lifted up he gasped once or twice and all was over. His neck had been broken by the fall. Mr. Calligan was about sixty-eight years old and was an old settler in Webster County. He was well known and universally well liked around the county. He leaves three children to morn his loss, Mrs. C. W. Maher, of Badger, Mrs. L. C. Warner, now living in Miles City, Montana, and T. F. Callagan, of Milwaukee. The funeral occurred from Corpus Christi Church Monday morning at 10 o'clock."
His probate records show that there was a $100 payment for his monument; he is buried in lot B43 of the church's cemetery north of town, and the marker for his grave is about five feet tall. Each of his surviving children received $278.34 in settlement of the estate.
The 1880 census shows that his parents were both born in Ireland.6
