She married Edward Behling, son of Fred Behling and Emilia Bressler, on 24 May 1911 in Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin.2,3 She died on 13 July 1923 in 469 2nd Ave. E.N., Kalispell, Flathead County, Montana.4 She was buried on 14 July 1923 in Evergreen Cemetery in Menomonie, Dunn county, Wisconsin, Her burial is in a grave in the Evergreen cemetery across from the crypt building; the grave is marked (a large stone) "Lottie H. Behling 1887-1923". Next to this is a surface plaque for her husband marked "Husband Edward G. Behling 1886-1966.".

There is a birth certificate listing the same parents and date of birth as Charlotte, but giving the name "Helen Wilhelminnie Helsom" in Volume 2, page 229 of the Dunn County records. Lottie was a domestic servant in her late teens. She spent the first part of her life with her parents in Menomonie, Wisconsin. According to her death certificate she moved to Kalispell, Montana on the 10th of June, just over a month before she died.

Robert Olaus Helsom was born on 27 January 1863 in Stranda, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; The birthplace is seen as "Strand on" in the record of his marriage. The current atlas shows no "Strand on" in Norway, but does show both a "Stranda" and "Strand." Pending further research and analysis it seems logical to assume the birthplace is Stranda.2,3,4 He was the son of Petter Bastian Rasmusson Helsem and Karen Maria Pedersdatter Sletvoll. As of 31 December 1865, Robert Olaus Helsom was also known as Rasmus O. Helsom.5 Robert immigrated to America via Detroit, Michigan in June 1872 from Bergen, Norway. Robert declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States on 3 November 1884 in Circuit Court, Dunn County, Wisconsin.6 He married Amelia Beil, daughter of Ludvig Beil and Nina Seehofer, on 16 December 1885 in Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin.7,3,4 He was granted citizenship by the Circuit Court, Dunn County on 14 July 1913 in Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin.8 He died on 18 June 1936 in Kalispell, Flathead County, Montana. 9.10 He was buried on 22 June 1936 in Evergreen Cemetery in Menomonie, Dunn county, Wisconsin. The obituary of Robert's father, in December of 1920, lists five children that were born, among them "Robert O. Helsom of Kalispell, Montana."

Extract from his 1891 biography in the History of the Chippewa Valley: "His ancestors were prominent in professions and various vocations, and made their home in Norway for many generations.... Robert O. Helsom was educated in the Memomonie school. He worked for what is now [in 1891] the Knapp, Stout Lumber Company, as a sawyer, for several years. The artist spirit within him asserted itself, however, and he left a good position to study photography .... He opened a gallery in the spring of 1886, and has been conducting a successful business ever since, making as high as 1600 negatives a year. He made many of the negatives from which steel portraits were made which appear in this history, as well as the negative utilized in making the statues of Captain A. Tainter and his wife, and Captain William Wilson, of Menomonie. Mr. Helsom is a republican and has taken quite an interest in local affairs. He is manager of the Menomonie City band, and has been the means of materially assisting its development. He was married at Menomonie, December 16, 1885, to Miss Amelia.... They have two children, Lottie M. and Edwin L. Helsom."

In an article published on the occasion of his widow's 87th birthday, it was reported that Robert had been elected Councilman of the City of Menomonie, and also held office as the city treasurer, and further states "At first he maintained a photographer's studio .n the building now occupied by the Menomonie dry cleaning establishment which was across the street from the Schutte & Quilling General store located on Broadway at that time,".
Robert and Amelia were married in the home of the bride's parents, according to the 26 December 1885 newspaper report of the marriage.
He applied for naturalization on 3 November 1884 and was granted citizenship on 14 July 1913 with certificate no. 346771.

An article in the 22 December 1905 Dunn County News notes their anniversary celebration and lists several out-of-town attendees.
Robert and his wife moved to Kalispell, Montana in 1920, and according to the article about his widow's 87th birthday, the move was in response to his ill health. They lived there for 17 years.

It is reported that his studio was over what in 1989 was the Champion Cleaners and Subway Sandwich in the 600 block of Broadway, Menomonie. He served one term on the city council, and for many years managed the city band. He was a member of the M.W.A. and A.O.U.W.

Amelia Beil was born on 21 December 1866 in Vansburg, Germany.2,3,4 She was the daughter of Ludvig Beil and Nina Seehofer. Amelia immigrated to America in 1869 . She married Robert Olaus Helsom, son of Petter Bastian Rasmusson Helsem and Karen Maria Pedersdatter Sletvoll, on 16 December 1885 in Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin.5,6,4 Her husband Robert died on 18 June 1936.7 She died on 12 April 1954 in the Sharlau Rest Home, Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin.8 She was buried on 14 April 1954 in Evergreen Cemetery in Menomonie, Dunn county, Wisconsin.8

Her mother and father were both born in Germany, according to census reports. The marriage certificate (when she married R. O. Helsom) listed her name as "Emilie Ottilie Beil". Extracts from an article in a Dunn County paper circa 1953 on the occasion of her 87th birthday: "After a few years, the family moved to Menomonie, and Mrs. Helsom (then Amelia Bile) was enrolled in the Coddington school....

After the death of Mr. Helsom ... [she] purchased a residence in North Menomonie, where she lived for several years until her health began to fail; five years ago last October she moved to the Scharlau Nursing Home, on Sixth street... [She] was a member of the Women' Relief Corps for more than 50 years and is a member of the Dunn County Old Settler's association."
Her death certificate includes "Informant: Dunn County Welfare Department", suggesting that Mrs. Helsom was on welfare at the time of her death.8,9

He married Ella Dennis, daughter of Henry Dennis, on 10 December 1913 in Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin.2,3 He died circa 1961 in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.4

In the obituary of his father (1936) it states that Edwin was living in St. Paul, and that his father had six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Since Charlotte apparently had no recognized children, it would appear that Edwin had six by that time. The obituary of his wife specifies seven children. Edwin's appearance in the Saint Paul city directory lists his occupation variously as a molder (at Midway Foundry) and millhand (at Sigmund Ulman Co.).

Petter Bastian Rasmusson Helsem was born on 2 December 1828 in Stranda, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; Mr. Helsom's obituary states his birthplace as "Stranden, Norway." Research suggests the place so identified is as shown.3,2,4 He was the son of Rasmus Iverson Helsem and Anne Peterdsdatter Ringstad. He married Karen Maria Pedersdatter Sletvoll, daughter of Peder Sletvoll and Nikolina (unknown surname), in 1861 in Norway.5,6,1,7 As of 1865, Petter Bastian Rasmusson Helsem was also known as Peter Rasmusson as he is listed this way in the 1865 Stranda census.4 As of 1871, Petter Bastian Rasmusson Helsem was also known as Peter Bastur Helsom. Petter immigrated to America circa June 1874 .8 His wife Karen died on 26 February 1911.9,10 He died on 19 November 1920 in Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin.3,11 He was buried on 22 November 1920 in Evergreen Cemetery in Menomonie, Dunn county, Wisconsin.3,11

In the 1865 census of Stranda, Norway, he is shown as a farmer, half owner of a farm presumably together with a Johannes Johannesson, whose family is listed in the same household. This farm had two horses, 15 cows/bulls, 29 sheep and one pig. Crops included barley oats and potatoes. Quite possibly the sale of his intrest in the farm provided the resources for his family's emmigration to America.

He was living at 1108 3rd Street, Menomonie in 1910. Extract from the 1891 biography of his son: "The father, Peter B. Helsom, was a mechanic all of his life and married, in Norway, Maria K. Slettevold.... The family immigrated to America in the spring of 1871, and settled in Dunn County, Wis, where the father followed his trade till the spring of 1878, when the family removed to Washington." His wife's obituary indicates they went to Washington state in 1888 and returned to Menomonie in 1902. His death certificate, with information provided by his granddaughter Charlotte, shows his occupation as "retired farmer." The appearance of Peter B. and "Carrie Maria" Helsom in the 1910 Menomonie census but not the 1900 Menomonie census suggests that they returned to Dunn County between those dates. His obituary says`"he came direct to Dunn County with his family June 14, 1872, and has lived continuously in this county with the exception of fourteen years when he lived in Tacoma, Wash.... He was a carpenter by trade and also worked for the Knapp, Stout & Co. company before he went to Washington."

There is a noted discrpancy regarding the date of immigration. County records show that Peter swore in 1877 that he immigrated in June of 1874, that Robert, his son, swore in 1884 (when he became 21) that he immigrated in June of 1872. The 1891 biography says the family immigrated in 1871.4,8,12

Margaret McRitchie

F, d. after 1863

This may be Margaret McRitchie (see text).
Margaret McRitchie was born in Scotland.1 The accompanying picture, as a nicely framed portrait, was found among Suzayne Cleaveland's things after her death. No one surviving at that time recognized the woman in the picture, so it is unlikely that it was Suzayne's adoptive mother, who would have been recognized. Conjecture (only) says that it is her adoptive mother's mother. She married George R. West before 1863.2 She died after 1863.
