Passport photo of Brede Pedersen, 1928
As a youngster in Norway Brede Pedersen learned the blacksmith trade, then learned to be a machinist at the largest shipbuilding yard in that country, eventually gaining the position of representing the builder on maiden voyages of ships. On one of these voyages, and with the permission of his employer, he was persuaded to stay with the ship on its subsequent trip to Shanghai. He eventually arrived in Korea and joined the fleet of the Korean customs service, which was administered by the British.
His firstborn son died while he was away at sea, and as a consequence he abandoned seafaring and took a job as an engineer at the Unsan Mines in what is now the northwestern section of North Korea. The Unsan mines were an American gold and lumber concession, 500 square miles in area. Because the mines were administered by Americans, there was an effort to make life there as American as possible, and English was the spoken language.
In a letter apparently written to his son on the occasion of his death, an unknown ex-employer wrote:
Your father, as you know, was an exceptionally fine man. He came of old Norwegian stock and was born in Odaien, not far from Kongsvinger. As a youngster he learned the blacksmith trade and then went to sea in the engine room service of steamers. He learned to be a machinist at Akera Mekaniske Værksted, the largest shipbuilding yard in Norway. He took the various marine engineers' examinations and eventually was appointed guarantee engineer for the Akers Mekaniske Verksted. In that capacity he would represent the shipbuilding co/ on the maiden voyage of their steamers. On one of these voyages he went with a ship to Odessa, where he was supposed to leave the ship and return to Oslo by rail. But the ship's owners were so displeased with their own engineer and so pleased with your father that they asked him to stay on, and obtained the consent of Akers Shipbuilding Works to let him take the ship on her voyage to Shanghai.
When the ship arrived in Shanghai it was sold to the Korean Gov't. and Capt. Gundersen who became your father good friend took charge of the vessel and persuaded your father to enter the Korean Gov't. service too. They plied the Korean Coast, but eventually the vessel was sold to David W. Dessler, an American, who lived in Chemulpo and was the O.C.M. Co. agent. Dessler bought several other vessels, naming them all "Ohio" 1 to 5, after his native state. Most of these vessels were bought in Finland and your father and Capt. Gundersen used to travel by the Trans~Siberian railroad to Finland, inspect the vessels, buy them for Dessler and then bring them out via Suez. Dressler's S. S. Line kept up a service between Chinnempo and Kobe via ports, and made a lot of money. The Nippon Yusen Kaisna finally bought out the line, and your father, having realised what would happen, had, already entered our service in korea. He was with us for many years, but he left us to became the master mechanic at the French Mines. I need not write to you about his ability, or his sterling character, but believe me, you can be proud of him, and of the sturdy, independent, and very capable family of which he was a descendant.

Takino Yasui was Japanese. She accompanied her family to Korea when they decided to enter large-scale trade in soybeans and silkworms. They established headquarters not far from the Unsan mines, where she met her future husband. With her mairriage she became a Noregian citizen. On 20 July 1922 the Norwegian Charge d'Affaris in Tokyo issued a passport for her, apparently to accompany her son Charles on the first leg of his emigration trip to Yokohama.
