Captain John Pease was born on 30 May 1654 in Salem, Essex County, the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which at that time was part of the of the New England Confederation. He was the son of John Pease and Mary Goodell. He was christened on 3 July 1667. He married Margaret Adams, daughter of James Adams and Frances Vassall, on 30 January 1676/77 in Ipswich, Essex County, the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which at that time was part of the of the New England Confederation.3,4 He died on 29 November 1734.
John Pease was apprenticed at Salem to one John Symonds, who was probably a carpenter and joiner, and who died soon after. In his will he assigned his apprentice to his son James "during the term of time in the indenture, paying £40 in four years, £10 per annum." It seems probable he continued his apprenticeship until he left Salem. He and his brother Robert are said to have gone to Enfield in 1679 and lived the first winter in an excavation in the side of a hill about forty rods from where the first meeting-house stood. In 1685 they had extra land given them because they had been the "first cummers." He was one of the most prominent men in the history of Enfield. "...he early made his way to the far west, and took part with Sam Houston in the revolution which freed Texas from Mexico in 1836. He drafted the constitution and laws of the new republic. After Texas was admitted to the union Mr. Pease served three terms as Governor of the State."2
