Suzayne was a member of the faculty of the Voice Department of the Wisconsin College of Music in the 1931-1932 season. The announcement contained the following text and photo:
"SUZAYNE C. CLEAVELAND is well known in Milwaukee as an accomplished and versatile musician. She has a B.A. degree from Milwaukee-Downer College. She studied voice with Adele Strohmeyer for a number of years and has been a pupil of Frederick Carberry for the past three years. She received an Associate Teachers Certificate from the Wisconsin College of Music in June, 1931.
"Mrs. Cleaveland is a member of the MacDowell Club and has appeared often on club programs as soloist and in ensemble numbers.
"She won first place in voice in a musical contest sponsored by the Wisconsin College of Music in 1930. She was soloist at All Saint's Cathedral for a year and a half, has sung at Plymouth Congregational Church, Fourth and Second Churches of Christ, Scientist, and other city churches, frequently"
"Her beautiful voice, musical temperament and sympathetic nature, all combine to equip her strongly for her work as a teacher."2
Suzayne and LeRoy were divorced on 21 September 1933 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Suzayne, as the mother of the groom, attended Ethelene Ann Johnson and Richard Grant Cleaveland's wedding on 9 April 1949 in Whitefish Bay, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.3 She died on 25 December 1977 in Oconomowoc, Waukesha County, Wisconsin. She was buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee, Milwaukee county, Wisconsin.4

Suzayne was born Faith Norma Helsom, the daughter of Charlotte Helsom of Menomonie, Dunn County, WI. She was adopted by the Calligans as Margaret Suzayne Calligan on 21 September 1905; later she informally reversed the order of her first two names - she was known as Suzayne M. Calligan on her marriage license.
She received a BA degree from Milwaukee-Downer College, and an Associate Teachers Certificate from the Wisconsin College of Music, Milwaukee. Her divorce from LeRoy (aka Leroy) Cleaveland entered on September 21 1933. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Atlantic Laundry, Ryerson & Sons, Arthur Young and Co. and The Milwaukee Broadcasting Company, all of Milwaukee. She became Treasurer of the broadcasting company, which operated radio station WEMP. For several years she was an active member of the Quota Club (women's equivalent of the Chamber of Commerce) and later a member of the Milwaukee Athletic Club. She was active in the Christian Science church, and for a time performed as soloist at the Fourth Church in Milwaukee.
Her residence from 1933 to about 1975 was 1625 E. Marion St, in Shorewood; upon retirement she moved to Cedar Ridge, a Christian Science retirement home, in Oconomowoc, WI.

Jerome Lincoln Cleaveland, ca 1990
He graduated from Riverside High School in Milwaukee in 1925. For the next year and a half he attended the University of Wisconsin extension in Milwaukee. From 1927 to 1935 he worked at the Pere Marquette Line Steamship Company and part time at the East Side Radio Company with his brothers Earl and LeRoy. He spent the next three years with ACME Fast Freight as a salesman, then in 1938 went to work for Transamerican Freight Company.
He had been a member of the Naval Reserve from 1923 to 1931, and applied for and received a commission as Lt. Junior Grade in March of 1943 (his military service number was USNR 271084). In October of that year he joined the USS GEORGE, a Destroyer Escort, where it was being built in Bay City, Michigan. The GEORGE was 309 feet long, had a complement of 213(info). As Engineering Officer, he stayed with the ship for the next 14 months, traveling through the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi, through the Panama Canal, and operating out of New Hebrides and Manus, where he was when promoted to Lieutenant. In May of 1944 the GEORGE joined the RABY and ENGLISH for what was later termed the most successful anti-submarine action in the Pacific during WWII; during the next 30 days the team sank seven Japanese submarines. The GEORGE was sold for scrap in 1970 for $36,000.1

Jerome left the ship around Christmas of 1944 and was subsequently assigned as Engineer Officer to the USS HARRY L. CORL, a destroyer-sized ship used for support of SEABEE and FROGMAN activities (info). The war ended before the CORL saw any action; Jerome was aboard while the SEABEEs aboard constructed a weather station in Petropavlosk, on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.
Jerome was taken off active duty in November of 1945, and returned to work for Transamerican. He worked himself up to the position of Wisconsin District Manager before retiring in July of 1971. A longtime member of Luther Memorial Chapel in Shorewood, Wisconsin, Jerome held the positions of Elder and Financial Secretary and was active on the evangelical committee.2

Ethel (Cleaveland) Chandler
According to Earl Cleaveland, her brother, Ethel was saved from a serious - if not deadly - accident by the family dog, Champ. The home on Farwell Avenue in Milwaukee was on the side of a hill, and the streetcar line ran down in front of the house. One day her mother heard a great clamoring of the emergency bell of one of the streetcars and rushed to find the toddler Ethel being held back from the street she was trying to cross (in front of the streetcar) by faithful Champ who had her dress in his teeth. As Earl puts it, from that day on Champ was a real member of the family.4
Ethel had wanted to be a nurse, but her mother forbid it, so she attended a business school, later working for the University Club and the Pere Marquette Lines as an office clerk, later as an operator for the telephone company. As a youngster she had a one cylinder Harley-Davidson motorcycle. She met her husband-to-be Earl while working at the University Club. During and following World War II she accompanied her husband to various posts while he was on active duty with the Army Reserve, except that while he was on duty in England she worked as a lead welder on glider landing equipment in DeLand, Florida. After her husband left the service they went to Florida to live, spending some time in Avon Park and Daytona Beach, retiring to Fort Myers. She was an avid golfer, and prepared several very attractive decorative ceramics.
She continued to live in Fort Myers after her husband's death, but failing health prompted a move to an assisted living facility in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, to be near her daughter. Unfortunately that facility was demolished during the 2005 hurricane Katrina, and after being evacuated to several temporary facilities her son transported her to a similar facility near his home in Wisconsin. During her later years both in Fort Meyers and Bay Saint Louis she was active in using a computer to email friends and relatives, but gave that up shortly before the hurricane struck. Earl and Catherine Cleaveland on a visit to Arlington, 1991
Earl lived in early days with his parents on North Farwell Ave, Milwaukee. He graduated from Riverside High School in 1926. He established East Side Radio Company (North Avenue) and operated it during the period 1926 to 1938 then moved to Rice Lake, Wisconsin in October of 1938.
During WWII he worked for Pan American Airways doing contract electrical maintenance on military aircraft in Africa, mostly Ghana. At the conclusion of the war he returned to Rice Lake to establish a radio store. As television became popular, he created a cable television system which served a portion of Rice Lake, then sold it in December of 1965. For a transcript of his description of the cable system see the appendix "The Rice Lake Cable System." On-line viewers select
An avid hunter and fisherman, he took the opportunity to hunt whenever possible, including while in Africa. Active most of his life as a (tenpin) bowler, he won several tournaments and in 1932 set the Wisconsin State record for a nine game score with 2141 and set the world doubles (three-game) record of 1482 with his team mate Charlie Ciardo3.
An excellent story teller, he has recorded several audio tapes of his experiences for posterity. For some of his stories, see the appendix "Close Calls." On-line viewers select
