Thomas Freeland McCardle was born circa 1839 in Maryland. He was the son of Richard Pindell McCardell and Annie Maria Eichelberger. He married Alice Eve circa 1868.2 He died in March 1914 in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland.3 He was buried on 20 March 1914 in Cumberland, Allegany county, Maryland.3
According to his son, Roy L. McCardell, Thomas was a veteran of the Texas Rangers, Civil War (a Col. in the 64th Georgia Infantry: Manassas, Shiloh) and later was a Captain in the Maryland National Guard. The History of Western Maryland (page 1410) reports that he became the editor of the Cumberland Daily Times between May of 1874 and late 1876, the editor and publisher of the Mountain City Times following May of 1874, and the editor of the Leader for a few months in 1880. The cost of the latter paper was $2.50 per year.
His obituary says he was buried in Cumberland; the death location of Cumberland is only a guess.

[He] removed to Hagerstown with his father in 1798, when nine years old, and continued to remain in the same spot for the remainder of his life.... [He] represented the county in the General Assembly of Maryland, filled the office of Postmaster at Hagerstown, was a director in most of the banking and other companies, and was, up to within a few months of his death, one of the most active and experienced working directors of the Hagerstown Bank and the Washington County Insurance Company.
