Etson James McCardell was also known as Elton James McCardell.2 He was born on 11 February 1902 in Maryland. He was the son of Rollin Eugene McCardell and Effie Rachael King. Etson James McCardell graduated circa 1924 from Georgetown University in Washington, District of Columbia, with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. He married Margaret Almira Payne, daughter of William Hardin Payne and Carrie Smith, on 20 April 1927 in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida. He died on 6 March 1983 in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida. He was buried circa 7 March 1983 in Daytona Beach, Volusia county, Florida.
He is clearly shown as "Etson J." in the 1910 census listing, and as "James E." in the 1920 census listing. His daughter reports a conversation with his mother during which she indicated the name was "Elton James." In the Social Security death index he is shown as "J. McCardell" with an SSAN of 265-34-8837. Information from the Georgetown University Law School archives indicates that he used "J. Elton" in his first year there (1921), but in the yearbook he was identified as "J.E.". Later in 1924, in the Alumni directory, he was listed as "James Elton".
