From: Doeving Erik To: 'Richard Cleaveland' Subject: SV: Genealogy Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 18:10:38 +0200 I checked the 1865 census (carried out in January 1866). According to this census Brede Pedersen was 2 years at this time (date of birth not given), one brother Julius age 5, one half-brother Erik Olsen age 12 (son of Marthe). Bredes father Peder Johnsen was "husmann med jord" (cotter or crofter in English), which means that he did not own his farm but were allowed to run a small farm as part of larger estate (cotters usually paid ground rent by working on the landlords fields or in the forrest), this was common in Eastern Norway (particularly Hedmark county) less so in Western Norway. They lived on the farm Tullerud (probably the name of the cotter's farm) apparently part of Krattebøl (name of estate). Krattebøl is an old farm dating back at least 500 years. The last part of the name "Tullerud" suggests that it is a new farm ("rud" indicates that it is a clearing in the forrest - typical for cotters' farms in eastern Norway - established or re-established because of the population growth from around 1600). As I suggested in my previous mail, before 1900 surnames were unstable in Norway: The name of the farm was partly used as family name (together with name of father like "Eriksdatter" and "Johnsen") and partly as an adress. Modern family names were used mainly in the few cities in Norway (particularly Bergen with a substantial influence and imigration from northern Germany). Brede's father full name was probably "Peder Johns. Tullerud" or perhaps "Peder Johns Krattebøl", Brede might have abolished "Tullerud" when he left the farm ("Pedersen" did not reveal his modest origins). In the 1801-census Nord-Odalen was a part of Strøm district, there is no "cotter" called John (Brede Pedersen's grandfather) at Krattebøl. There is however a "John Gudmundsen", but he appears to be one of the owners of Krattebøl (the other is Ole Hansen). Perhaps he had many children and one of them (Peder) may have made deal with his brother (the landlord) and established the Tullerud farm to make a living (Tullerud is not in the 1801 census)? Peder was probably born later than 1801. More precise information must be obtained from "Bygdebok" or similar from Nord-Odal, try the municipality at postmottak@nord-odal.kommune.no or the library at biblioteket@nord-odal.kommune.no (they are probably able to check the genealogical literature on their shelfs), if available you should check local church records (try National Archives at http://www.riksarkivet.no/english/about.html) or contact http://www.genealogi.no/n_Engelsk/a_short_introduction_in_english.htm they will certainly be helpful.' Hope you find this information useful.
