Welcome to The Bates Association. I just looked at the material Lauren Delaney sent me with our new members and realized that you and I are not only neighbors (I live in DC) but also about 7th cousins. The mistake you have made in your pedigree is one that lots of people made.: the confusion between Edward of Boston and of Weymouth. Mary Bates of Chelmsford, married to Josiah Cleaveland was the daughter of John Bates and Mary Farwell, as you know. John Bates was the only child of Edward of Boston and Lydia Fairbanks. Our Edward came from Boston, Lincolnshire in 1633. I have a lot of material about our ancestor, Edward. He was something of a rogue as was his son John. I'm sorry you missed out last reunion in Chelmsford but hope you get to our next one in Salt Lake City. I"m not sure from your enclosed info if you know that Mary Farwell was of royal descent. That's kind of fun to trace. I did it with the help of Gary Boyd Roberts, the royal lineage expert at NEGHS. I've traced it way, way back to "Clovis The Riparian" about 500 AD and will be glad to share the pedigree with you. The royal lines are Bulkeley (not Buckly) and Welby. Poor Mary Farwell married down when she married John Bates but I suppose the choices in chelmsford were slim. We have a few other members in the EB line including one also from Cleaveland. Perhaps Lauren can check that out as I don't remember the name now. I do have a lot of material to share when I get it organized but for now I wanted to welcome you and tell you that we really are related. Ours is a small line probably because our Edward died before 1645 when his widow married Wm Fletcher, and he had only one child. We EB folks need to stick together...
