James Sherman Kirkland was born on 26 November 1873 in Flint, Steuben County, Indiana. He was the son of James Kirkland Jr. and Charity Laubach. James Sherman Kirkland also went by the name of Sherm. He died on 27 February 1897 in Massillon, Stark County, Ohio.
From one of his obituaries: James Sherman Kirkland was seized with heart failure when in the lobby of the Hotel Conrad, between 3 and 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, and within a half hour he was dead. Mr. Kirkland had been a victim of consumption for the past year, and this disease was probably instrumental in causing his death. When first overcome, Dr. W. H. Kirkland, his cousin, was summoned, and he was removed to the Kirkland residence, near by, where death occurred.
Mr. Kirkland was 23 years of age. He was born near Flint, Ind., and being left an orphan in his infancy, his uncle, D. E. Kirkland, at that time a resident of this city, took him to raise. Of late years, however, he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. William Swihart, the latter being a daughter of D. E. Kirkland. Deceased was for many years employed in Russell & Co.'s office, and after leaving there was connected with the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway. About a year ago he went to Colorado, hoping to regain his failing strength, but returned to Massillon last December with but little improvement in his condition. 3
From the city directory at the time it is clear that he was employed as a clerk in the hotel where he had his fatal attack.4
