That this Thomas McCardell is the father of James, Thomas, Richard, Simon and Ulton is supported by the 1840 census which shows this Thomas' family with two males in the 30-40 age range (James and Thomas), two males in the 20-30 age range (Wilfrid and Simon) and one male 15-20 (Ulton). Adjacent to this entry is one for Richard McCardell, where the eldest male in that household, at 30-40, matches the expected age of the Richard Findhill [Pindell?] McCardell listed along with the others in the McCardell bible extracts items [52] to [60]. This information matches that found in the Williams book. No females are shown in that census except for the one 60-70 which checks with Annie's approximate age. It can be assumed that the daughters, all well over marriageable age by 1840, had married and left home.
It is believed that this Thomas McCardell was referred to as "Charles" in the line above [66] in the McCardell Family Bible. Conflicting evidence states that Thomas was born on 14 February 1778.3 He was born on 4 February 1779 in Ireland.4 He was the son of James McCardell. He married Annie Nogle before 1803.5 He died on 26 October 1843.6

Thomas and Annie emigrated to America from County Antrim, Ireland. They first settled in New Jersey, then moved to Williamsport where they owned a large farm and a number of slaves. Extracts from "Newspaper Abstracts of Allegheny and Washington Counties" (F187.A4 W71, 1989): 20 Nov 1811, Thomas McCardell was listed as a contact person for the sale of some property. 15 Jan 1812: "Thomas McCardell has found some money near courthouse square." 21 Sep 1814: Thomas McCardell has taken up a stray filly at his farm known as Salisbury Spring."
