Josiah Cleaveland was born on 7 October 1690 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which at that time was part of the of the Dominion of New England. He was the son of Josiah Cleaveland and Mary Bates. He married Abigail Paine, daughter of Elisha Paine and Rebecca Doane, on 7 August 1710 in Canterbury, Windham County in the Connecticut Colony.1 He died on 9 February 1749 in Canterbury, Windham County in the Connecticut Colony.
Josiah moved with his parents to Canterbury at the age of 4, where the family was one of two original settlers. He became a man of wealth and prominence there, and was considered a gentleman farmer. In 1721, along with 25 others, petitioned to establish a church there, and in 1731 joined in formalizing the establishment of the township. He was very active in the church, to the extent that two of his sons (Revs. John and Ebenezer) were temporarily expelled from Yale College because they "attended Separate meetings in obedience to their parents".2

Statue of Moses Cleaveland in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.
General Moses Cleaveland, the founder of the city of Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, Ohio, and in honor of whom the city was named, dwelt at Canterbury, Conn., an eminent lawyer. Records of the Revolutionary Army show that he entered the service the spring of 1777. He graduated from Yale in September of 1777, but probably none of the class were present at the exercises, for all were permitted to leave previously for the army, being commissioned officers. Was commissioned as captain in the newly-formed Corps of Sappers and Miners, U.S.A., on 14 February 1780. He was on active duty for at least four years, later taking up the practice of law in his home town of Canterbury. He was several times elected to the state legislature. Early in 1796 he was advanced to the Generalship of the fifth brigade of the state militia. In May of 1796 he was commissioned by the directors of the Connecticut Land Company, led the first surveying and exploring party (of 50 persons) into the lands of the Western Reserve. The area which is now known as Cleveland was surveyed by his party on October of 1796, and it was named "Cleaveland" after the General. It was in 1830 that a newspaper called the Cleveland Advertiser was established. In preparing to issue the first number the editor discovered that the "heading" was too long to fit the "form" and so, in order to adjust it he dropped out the "a" in the first syllable of the word Cleaveland, and made it read "Cleveland." The public at once accepted this change in orthography. There is a statue of Moses in the city center.2
