SAD DEATH OF M.L. CALLIGAN
His Neck Broken by a Fall Down Stairs Last Saturday Evening - The Coroner's Verdict.
Michael M. Calligan, one of Webster County's prosperous and popular farmers, met his death in a peculiarly sad manner at his home in Cooper township last Saturday evening.
Mr. Calligan had been in town during the day and had returned home at about eight o'clock in the evening. At nine o'clock he went upstairs to retire for the night and a few moments later lay at the foot of the stairs, a corpse. It is thought that after going to his room he remembered something demanding his presence downstairs and missed his footing at the stairway in the dark. The family with whom he was living were startled by the sound of the fall and at once investigated its origin. They found Mr. Calligan lying at the foot of the stairs. When lifted up he gasped once or twice and all was over. His neck had been broken by the fall.
The corner [sic] was at once notified and an inquest held Sunday morning. The verdict will be found below.
Mr. Calligan was about sixty-eight years old and was an old settler in Webster County. He was well known and universally well liked around the county. He leaves three children to mourn his loss, Mrs. C.W. Maher, of Badger, Mrs. I.C. Warner, now living at Miles City, Montanna, and T.F. Calligan of Milwaukee.
The funeral occured from Corpus Christi church Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. Matt. Lenihan conducted the sevices.
